Asbestos Testing

Wingfield Environmental helps homeowners, commercial property owners, contractors, schools, and other concerned parties, confirm whether building materials contain asbestos before purchases, renovations, maintenance in suspect areas, or demolition. We also conduct asbestos clearance testing following mitigation to show that spaces are below established levels for airborne asbestos before re-entry to areas where work has taken place that may have disturbed asbestos containing materials. Our staff is licensed/certified in TN and VA to conduct asbestos inspections and testing.

When testing makes sense

Test before you cut, sand, grind, or remove any suspect materials—especially in buildings constructed before the early 1990s. Although most new uses of asbestos in materials were banned around 1989, asbestos containing materials are still currently imported into the US (some known/some unknown) so testing of certain suspect materials is ALWAYS considered prudent before disturbing them.

Common triggers for asbestos testing include planned renovations, repairs following water damage or leaks, building permit requirements, lender requests, buyer’s due diligence, or simple curiosity from homeowners wanting to protect their families.

The accepted government exposure level to asbestos is “ZERO EXPOSURE” as asbestos is a known carcinogen. Therefore, before exposing either your family, children, or workers, to asbestos, get the materials tested before disturbing them. Your health is worth it.

What we do

With respect to inquiries about potential asbestos in building materials, we would discuss your specific situation/needs, and then visit your residence, worksite, or place of business to perform a walk through inspection to inspect the materials directly requested to be sampled, or to identify suspect materials for testing throughout the space you are concerned about.

Following the walkthrough inspection, our licensed & accredited inspectors would properly collect any samples suspect for containing asbestos and ship them to an accredited laboratory for analysis. There were thousands of items historically that contained asbestos, but the most common we observe in houses and commercial spaces today include, but are not limited to: floor tiles, mastic/glue, vinyl flooring, ceiling texture (e.g., popcorn ceiling), pipe insulation, duct tape, roofing, siding, and sheetrock joint compounds. Once we have received the data from the laboratory, we will provide you with a report detailing where the asbestos (if any) was detected, the type of asbestos identified (e.g., chrysotile – the most common), and the percentage present.
