UST Release Investigation

Our staff has over 100 cumulative years experience investigating and remediating petroleum releases across Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. Our professionals have been involved in hundreds of simple to complex investigations involving soil, soil vapor, and hydrogeological assessments. We excel in identifying and characterizing contaminant plumes, assessing the risk associated to the public and the environment, and then engineering solutions to address them to the satisfaction of the regulatory entities.

Why It Matters

A leaking UST can quickly become an expensive problem with significant civil and environmental liabilities if not handled correctly. Petroleum releases not only pose risks to the soil and groundwater under and around a leaking tank, but these leaks can also lead to flammable vapors entering nearby utilities (storm sewers) and buildings leading to potential explosions or harmful exposure to the public.

Wingfield Environmental is one of the leading and most respected UST investigation and cleanup firms in the southeast. We’ve built long-standing relationships with the various state regulatory agencies and staff in the regions we work, and are well known for our integrity and quality of our work.

What We Do

Our team routinely provides all of the following investigation/mitigation services and more:

  • Site characterization – Soil, soil gas, groundwater investigations to define the extent of petroleum contamination.
  • Risk assessment – Evaluation of all collected data and compare to all established and calculated regulatory thresholds or cleanup levels. Assess the various exposure pathways in which receptors could become exposed to contamination. Prepare corrective action plans to address risk presented by contamination, and design/engineer mitigation systems to mitigate the risks.
  • Remedial system design and implementation – Engineer and install site-specific solutions to mitigate environmental risk. Mitigation could be as simple as monitored natural attenuation, or more complex such as installing soil vapor extraction systems, air sparging systems, dual-phase high vacuum extraction systems, etc..
  • Monitoring and reporting – Conduct ongoing sampling activities (e.g., soil, soil vapor, or groundwater monitoring), monitor/evaluate data trends, and prepare detailed reports for our clients and regulatory agencies until case closure is achieved.
  • Regulatory coordination – Keep lines of communication open with UST program staff to keep projects compliant and on schedule.

Our Approach

Assess the release

We confirm the leak, review site history, and define investigation objectives.

Investigate and evaluate risk

Sampling and analysis determine the nature and extent of contamination.

Remediate and close

We design and implement corrective actions, monitor performance, and prepare closure documentation for regulatory approval.

What You Receive

  • Detailed investigation and remediation reports suitable for agency submittal

  • Sampling data and figures showing contamination extent and reduction over time

  • Regulatory correspondence and closure documentation

  • Peace of mind knowing your cleanup is handled correctly and cost-effectively

Why Choose Us?

If your state offers an UST insurance fund and you’re eligible for coverage, Wingfield Environmental can provide all state required investigation and cleanup costs without significantly disrupting your cash flow.

Here’s how it works:
  • If you state has an UST insurance fund, Wingfield Environmental will complete your application to access that fund (if application is necessary).
  • Once your UST insurance fund deductible has established and met, Wingfield Environmental will submit all reimbursement requests for eligible work directly to the UST insurance fund for reimbursement.
  • Once the UST insurance fund has issued payment to Wingfield Environmental for work performed, if any of the costs are denied by the insurance fund, the tank owner may or may not be required to pay those costs.

Since being in business, Wingfield Environmental’s UST insurance fund claim specialists have been successful in getting near 100% of all costs covered by the UST insurance fund.
