VA Home Heating Oil Cleanup

A leaking home heating oil tank can be stressful to you as a homeowner and debilitating to the environment. However, if you live in Virginia, you’re not alone in handling it. The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VDEQ) maintains a special insurance fund with a $500 deductible that helps homeowners clean up the qualifying leaks and spills. Wingfield Environmental staff has worked with that program for over 30 years.

How the program works

If your heating oil tank leaks for any number of reasons other than negligence, the VDEQ fund will most likely cover the assessment and cleanup costs above a one-time $500 deductible that is often waived by Wingfield Environmental.

Unfortunately, if your favorite NASCAR driver loses the Daytona 500 and you kick your tank over…your paying for that one.

What we do

When a release happens, Wingfield Environmental responds quickly and mobilizes to the site, stopes the leak, recovers product, protect your property, and to the extent practical, tries to minimize environmental impacts of off-site sources like neighbor’s properties or surface water.

What to expect when we are engaged:

  • Eliminate the source of the leak

  • Clean up spilled heating oil

  • Install temporary protection to prevent migration (like creek booms or absorbents)

  • Handle all documentation, coordination, and reporting with the Virginia DEQ

Our experienced team has built long-standing relationships with local HazMat teams, fire departments and DEQ staff throughout southwest Virginia, helping countless homeowners get through this stressful process with minimal to no financial strain.

How the process works

Initial Response

We respond quickly to stop the leak and prevent further impact.

Cleanup

You focus on your home while we coordinate with the DEQ and insurance fund.

Monitoring

We monitor your site, take monthly samples and ensure that the threat is mitigated long term.

What to Expect

Once you have engaged Wingfield Environmental, we will work with responding HazMat teams, fire departments and VDEQ staff to mitigate the heating oil spill.

  • You will never pay more than the $500 deductible. In fact, several of our clients qualify for not even having to pay the deductible cost to Wingfield Environmental.

  • Wingfield Environmental will carry all assessment and cleanup costs above the deductible. Basically, once that deductible is met, we will bill the VDEQ for payment of all costs — not you.

  • If the VDEQ fund denies a cost above that deductible, we absorb it 100%. You’ll never get a surprise invoice or a “denied claim” balance once your deductible has been met.

That’s the kind of trust and transparency that comes from doing this for decades.
